How Walmart is devouring the food system…

Home/Green News/How Walmart is devouring the food system…

The below infographic shows how Walmart is well on its way to grab more and more of the food system. It already captures $1 in every $4 Americans spend on groceries…

Walmart’s growth has started a series of mergers in the food industry with only a few big middlemen left between the 2MM US farmers and us, 310MM consumers/eaters. The result is  farmers on the losing end of the equation, just like employees and local economies. Farmers struggle to get a fair price for their products, workers’ wages are falling, and where there is one (or more) Walmart stores in town, small businesses are closing and local communities are impoverished. With less to spend on everything, some struggling families are forced into buying cheaper, lower quality food.

It is only fair to wonder if there is a link between poverty and diet-related health problems, like obesity and diabetes, conditions often  seen in poorer communities…

Walmart has officially no intention to stop its march towards more store openings, but more cities now reject the retailer’s store proposals, favoring instead local grocery stores, farmers’ markets and any other way to (food related and not) feed the local economy and protect its communities. Will that be enough?
